Rally seeks support for Miss. education funding

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - An estimated 200 parents, school board members, superintendents and lawmakers rallied Tuesday at theMississippi Capitol, saying education needs to be a priority in the state budget.

It's unclear, though, when a budget might be finished or how much the schools will receive.House and Senate leaders have until Wednesday night to reach compromises on a state spending plan for the year that begins July1. But the two chambers are far from agreement, and it's possible that they'll miss their deadline.

Some lawmakers want to wrap up the three-month session on schedule, by April 3.

Others want leave the Capitol for a few weeks and return in late April to finish a budget, when they believe an extra $187 million might be available from the federal government.
