LAUREL, MS. (WDAM) - A Jones County Junior College student is using a community service project to help local elementary students perform better in school.

Kraig Simpson is a sophomore Honors College student at JCJC. Earlier this year he established a tutoring program at three Jones County schools.

On Tuesdays, Simpson and other students help fifth graders improve their reading skills. Simpson also received two prestigious scholarships to advance his education at Mississippi State partly because of the tutoring initiative.

Simpson says, "We are here to help them on an academic standpoint. To help them learn better techniques of reading, writing, learning. But also to help them grow on a personal level, and help them understand the importance of education."

Simpson's tutoring program takes place at West Jones, Glade, and South Jones Elementary Schools.
