By Randy Swan

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A 24-year-old Jackson man has pleaded guilty to two lesser charges of felony child abuse and manslaughter.

Jurors from Forrest County were loaded on a Pike County school bus this morning and transported to Magnolia to hear the capital murder trial of a man accused in the starvation death of a 2-year-old.

Thomas Kelly of Jackson is charged with the May 16, 2008 apparent starvation death of Markqice Hood.

Kimberly Hood, 27, the child's biological mother, is also charged with capital murder and will go on trial in September.

Authorities found the child's body in his bed at a McComb home shared by Kelly and Hood.

They said he was in a severely malnourished condition and appeared to have been dead for some time.

Kelly's defense attorneys requested a jury from outside Pike county be seated to hear the capital murder case.

The Forrest county jury will be sequestered throughout the trial, which is expected to last until Saturday.
