Pine Belt United Way exceeds fund-raising goals

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Pine Belt Chapter of the United Way gave its annual report Tuesday during a luncheon in Laurel.

Local businesses supporting the organization received awards during the meeting.

Organizers said they exceeded their 2009 goal of $600,000 by more than $22,000.

The organization covers Covington, Jasper, Jones, Smith and Wayne counties.

    Mississippi corrections officials discovered more contraband than expected during a shakedown at a Parchman work camp. The shakedown at Unit 26 of the Mississippi State Penitentiary, part of Operation Zero Tolerance, resulting in the discovery of canned and leaf tobacco, cellphones, cellphone chargers and marijuana.
