Hub City Dragway kicks off racing season

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - On Tuesday, nearly 10,000 flocked to Forrest County to take part in the Hub City Dragway's 14th annual Mardi Gras celebration.

"Every year we get ready for this." said Tommy Kelly, who participated in the race. "It's a big deal for us in Mississippi.

It's just the biggest local race of the year. Race announcer Al Tucci said people come from Louisiana, Chicago, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Memphis, Tennessee and other places around the country to race in Forrest County each year.

"We've been coming down for about 10 years," said Bryan Franklin, a racing crew member. "It's always a great event. We enjoy ourselves and hopefully we'll have some good luck this weekend to try and win this thing."

Cold temperatures Tuesday caused trouble for some crews.

"We've had some good times on the front motor, but we haven't had any good hits on the nitros yet," said Toby Brown.

The races ended Tuesday night after a purse of $20,000 was split among three racing classes winners.
