Covington County, MS (WDAM) - Jim Kinslow hasn't stepped a foot into his new office in Columbia as the new police chief, but he's already got a plan of action.

"The first thing that will be established is there's going to be two way communication from the citizens of Columbia and the Columbia police department," said Kinslow.

That's the type of talk the board of aldermen and the mayor both like to hear.  Kinslow was selected from a pool of 12 candidates.

Mayor Reed Houston said the city was in need of a change in the police chief position....someone who has great experience, especially with the community.

"I take it as a compliment and a load of confidence that they selected me because they had a good group of candidates," Kinslow said.

Kinslow also said the department has some kinks to work out, just like any other department.  Once he gets in he said he will focus on staff inspection, man power, and the department's professionalism.

Kinslow says he will meet with everyone in the department to have a conversation about making things better.

"I want to assure the mayor and the board of aldermen and the citizens in Columbia that we're going to do the right thing and we are going to do whatever is best for the citizens," said Kinslow.
