Tenn. Guard preparing to deploy to Iraq

CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - More than 3,000 soldiers of the Tennessee National Guard will soon be headed from Camp Shelby to Iraq. They are members of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

They took part in a farewell ceremony at Camp Shelby this afternoon. The unit has been training at the post for the last 2 months for a 10-month deployment to Iraq.

It's the second time the unit has trained at Camp Shelby for duty in that country.

"Our mission generally, is a defense-type, security force mission," said Col. Jeffrey H. Holmes, commanding officer of the unit. "We'll be protecting convoys, routes, roadways, coalition force installations, things of that nature," Holmes said.

After the hour-long farewell ceremony, soldiers and family members gathered for another service to dedicate a unit monument at the post.

It lists the names of the 14 troops from the 278th that were killed in action during the unit's first deployment to Iraq.
