6 arrested so far in Marion drug round-up

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Several Columbia-area residents are in jail tonight, in connection with the largest drug round-up in Marion County in many years. The raid began about 8:30 a.m. Thursday at 515 Nathan Street.

Two people were arrested there, including 44-year-old Freddrick "Polkie" Showers, who faces drug selling and possession charges. Officers say they confiscated both powdered and crack cocaine from the residence, along with a firearm and $1,600 in cash.

Four other suspects were arrested this afternoon at various locations. Other arrests are pending.

"It's not always easy to get them, but finally, they made the mistake and made a sale to somebody...they didn't know it, but they were on Candid Camera," said Berkley Hall, Marion County Sheriff.  "Another one will step up and take his place, but I'll just forewarn them, they never know who they're selling to, so that's our job and we're going to continue to go after the drug dealers in Marion County," Hall said.

The Marion County Sheriff's Department and the Pearl River Basin Narcotics Task Force conducted the raid.
