Toyota dealers prepare for accelerator fix

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The world's largest car maker has made one of the largest recalls.  About eight million Toyota vehicles worldwide have been recalled because of a default in the gas pedal. Now the company says there is a fix.

"We have the fix and we're going to take great care of our customers through our dealers," said Jim Lentz, COO of Toyota Motor Sales.

Toyota dealers have been watching and waiting patiently to see what the fix is, all the while assuring customers in the Toyota brand.

"They call and we reassure them that they are going to be safe in the vehicle and we're gone take care of them," said Toyota of Hattiesburg general manager, Alton Pierce.

Pierce said there have not been any instances of the accelerator getting stuck on his customers.  However, he said about 30 percent of the vehicles in his lot have the part that is being recalled.   The dealership has a plan in place to get the parts installed.

"Vehicles we already have sold, we're going to do those first," said Pierce. "We're going to be doing it by appointment and getting those done as quickly as possible."

Toyota is sending its dealers something they call a shim. It's a small piece of steel that's going to go behind the pedal. Toyota says that should decrease friction in the accelerator.

Many critics say this massive recall has defamed Toyota's good reputation; pierce disagrees.

"Everyday has it challenges, but I don't really call it a setback," said Pierce. "We still have vehicles and we're selling them every day."

The following is a list of the vehicles under the recall:

2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia.
