HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - This week, the University of Southern Mississippi kicks off their year-long centennial celebration with a performance by a world renowned soprano
Renee Fleming will join the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra for a concert Friday night in Jackson.
Southern Miss officials and representatives with the Mississippi Opera introduced Fleming Thursday in Jackson.
"On two levels I'm really thrilled," said Fleming. "One is that I get to support two important cultural organizations in Mississippi, and secondly that I'll have a chance to really interact with students."
Fleming said when she was a student, her interactions with accomplished international performers played an important part role in her development as an opera singer.
"I was inspired by them, I was also humbled also by seeing what was required," she said.
Fleming's performance is taking place at Jackson's Thalia Mara Hall. It will mark her Mississippi debut, and one of the few times she has performed with a university orchestra.
Over 2,000 people from 15 states are expected to attend.
