Pilot honors late mayor with plane fly-over

BASSFIELD, MS (WDAM) - The late mayor of Bassfield, Buford Blount, received a special tribute today from a New York pilot and author who flew over the Jeff Davis County town in an airplane that was piloted by Blount in World War II. Seth Washburne flew a C-47 transport plane several times over the main street area of town to honor Blount, a veteran of the Air Force who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, before serving as mayor of Bassfield for 36 years.

He died last month of a heart attack.

Washburne had met Blount a few months ago while researching the history of Blount's squadron.  Washburne's father also flew in that unit.

"A lot of times for military honors, there's a fly-by of an airplane and so I want to do a fly-by for Buford, just as a tribute, a send-off to him to say thank you for being such a wonderful man to so many people and serving your country so well," Washburne said.

Washburne bought the plane recently in Puerto Rico and had hoped to fly with Blount over the town one day. He decided to make the fly-over on his way from Puerto Rico to Texas, where he is having the plane restored.

Many of Blount's family members and friends witnessed the tribute.  "I loved it," said Lisa Blount, one of Buford Blount's daughters. "I wish my father had been here," she said.

"It was wonderful," said Cecil Blount, Blount's widow. "I really appreciate Seth providing it for us, it brought back lots of memories," she said.

Washburne said after his plane is restored, he plans to fly it in air shows.
