Petal school superintendent addresses staff over budget cuts

PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Wednesday, Petal's school superintendent held his first annual state of the school address to enlighten his teachers on the district's future.

John Buchanan spoke to an auditorium full of Petal faculty and staff members. He said the state budget is making his district pinch pennies.

"We will be able to survive, but we don't know how much longer we can survive at the current rate we are going with these budget cuts," said Buchanan. "We would just really like a number to start the 2010-11 school year off. I think we will make it through the '09-10 year we are in now, but its going to be close."

Buchanan said regardless of the state budget cuts, he plans to protect the integrity of the district - but some changes will have to be made.

"That could be budget cuts, that could be the reduction in the number of days that our folks are on contract," said Buchanan. "Small things, maybe not buying textbooks, looking at reducing the number of field trips, maybe boys and girls both riding the same bus to basketball games so areas that we've had some flexibility; we no longer have that, so we have to look at every possible scenario."

Buchanan said regardless of the dollar, it is the people who make the community, and he said education will not suffer in Petal.
