Hattiesburg police standoff ends peacefully

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A nearly five hour long standoff with Hattiesburg police ended peacefully early Thursday morning.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police responded to a home on Kensington Drive in west Hattiesburg after a resident threatened to harm himself.

Hattiesburg's STAR team was called out after the man did not communicate with police.  Police tried to get the suspect to come out for over four hours.

The individual eventually turned himself in.   No one else was inside the home.  The individual was taken to a mental health facility to be evaluated.  Police say he will not be charged.

"We have been in communication with some of the individuals who were close to this subject," said Sgt. Synarus Green, HPD spokesman. "They told us that there was some history and some concerns around the areas of depression.  There were some personal life issues, but like I said some of those things are going to be handled during this counseling session hopefully at the treatment facility where we left him."

Several neighbors told us the subject is a former law enforcement officer, but the police department would not confirm that information.
