COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - The City of Columbia is a step closer to naming its new police chief.

Interim police chief John Wayne Tolar has filled the post since October. The city set up a panel of outside officers to help conduct the search.

Columbia Mayor Reed Houston said the search started off with 12 candidates and now the search is down to five. The board of aldermen will interview each candidate after they are reviewed thoroughly.

Houston said the city will not rush in making a choice because this position is critical to the city's safety.

"We want to do a thorough background check on each of the five candidates and that is not going to be done in a day," said Houston. "We just want to spend time doing that, so we can do to the best of our abilities get the best candidate as the police chief of Columbia."

Houston would not release the names of the five candidates. He said the panel was headed up by former Petal police Chief Lee Shelbourne.
