Laurel schools at risk of failure

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -Laurel schools are at risk of failing based on the State Department of Education's new accountability system.

Four out of six Laurel schools are at risk. One school is failing, while the other is on academic watch.

Laurel School Superintendent Glenn McGee said these results do not sit well with him and his staff.

"We are not happy at where we are with any of the results that came in," he said.
"We expected and were told that it could possibly happen to a lot of school districts in the state because of the new system being put in place. That system now ranks districts from highest to lowest. All six Laurel Schools are in the bottom."

McGee said in order to improve test numbers it will take the entire community. Parents and teachers must work together to help students compete on a national level. The new standards are national standards.

McGee says the district is holding meetings at each school during the month of January to gain community involvement.

"I'm positive we won't be in this position this year," he added.

State tests will be held in May.
