JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Firefighters were busy this morning in Ovett, not only fighting a residential fire, but also trying to stay warm while doing it.

A fire at a mobile home on Highway 15 around 2:00a.m.destroyed the structure, but caused no injuries. The homeowners were away when the fire broke out.

About a dozen firefighters from several departments worked in 15-degree temperatures to battle the blaze.

"Last night, was the first experience in my 15 years that I've fought a fire in this kind of temperatures," said Ovett fire chief Gordon Pitts. "It was definitely a challenge.  Our nozzles were icing up and we had to knock ice off equipment and stuff to get it connected; it got rather cold.  Even in full turn-out gear fighting the fire, it got cold."

The homeowners were spending the night away from this trailer because of a broken water pipe. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing.
