Woman drives into pond, nearly drowns, revived by paramedics

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A south Mississippi woman is recovering after nearly drowning in an icy Lamar County pond early Wednesday.

Shortly after 6 a.m. the woman apparently ran off the road and plunged into a pond along Hwy 11, just north of Lumberton.

A county employee driving by called 911, and within minutes ASAP paramedics, and firemen from Rock Hill and Lumberton arrived on the scene.

Emergency crews jumped in the water and tried to rescue the driver, but the vehicle began to sink. Paramedics tied their lifeline to the vehicle's luggage rack and then to a county truck on shore and were able to pull the vehicle closer to the edge of the pond.

The woman may have been under water for as long as four minutes and was unconscious.

Paramedics were able to revive the woman on the way to Forrest General Hospital where she is in an intensive care unit.
