Former Columbia police chief indicted on charges of embezzlement

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) –A Marion County Grand Jury has indicted former Columbia police chief Joe Van Parkman for allegedly buying three weapons for his personal use but charging them to the city.

Parkman was arrested by investigators from the Public Integrity Division of the Attorney General's Office on charges of embezzlement and making false statements.

According to the indictments, Parkman allegedly bought a Rock River AR- 15 rifle from a sporting goods store in Columbia but submitted a bill to the city for shotgun shells.  He also allegedly turned in a bill for squad equipment, but records show he purchased a 40-caliber handgun.

Neither weapon was listed in police inventory.

The embezzlement charge stems from his alleged use of city funds to buy a Springfield XD 45-caliber handgun.

Parkman has been released on $20,000 bond.
