Southern Pines Animal Shelter catches fire, arson suspected

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg fire officials suspect arson is the cause of a late afternoon fire which destroyed the office building at the Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Hattiesburg Sunday afternoon.

Some items may also have been stolen, say officials with Hattiesburg police.

The fire was discovered around 4 p.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they were able to put out the blaze quickly, but not before the adoption office and two others were completely gutted.

Four cats did not survive.

Despite the fire, a Southern Pines spokesperson said they will open again.

"If the community could just help to reach out and keep us in their prayers," said Karen Reidenbach of Southern Pines. "We'll have normal operations on Monday, as normal as can be after something like this. We'll have to set up a make shift office so again if anyone would like to donate that would be great. Hopefully by Monday afternoon we'll have a better idea of what needs that we have."

None of the other animals at the shelter were harmed.
