Miss. National Guard continues war role

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi's Adjutant General, William Freeman, says Mississippi Guardsmen and Camp Shelby will continue to play an important role in the war on terror in the Middle East in 2010.

General Freeman says two units will deploy to Afghanistan in the near future.

"We've trained over 90,000 people coming in and out of Camp Shelby thus far, and we continue to train for the future," said Freeman.

Freeman said a second brigade will deploy in early January.  He also said about 7500 soldiers will be training at Camp Shelby during that time.

Mississippi has one National Guard unit currently in Afghanistan, but General Freeman said they should be home soon.
