Ellisville toymaker to send gifts to State School children

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) - For the last 23 years, Cliff Davis has created just about anything you could imagine out of wood.

"I look at a piece of wood and say, 'Talk to me,' and that it does," said Davis.

He has worked with wood as a hobby since his teens, but a year ago Davis decided to turn his Ellisville workshop into a business called Pineywoods Wooden Toys where he is teaching kids the art of crafting wood.

Davis will reveal his latest creations at the Ellisville State School Christmas Party when he reveals the secret gifts he's made for each of the children for Christmas.

"My grandfather did it, he was a master cabinet maker, and I always hung around his shop. I just fell in love with making woodwork."

Davis also donates his time and creations to the kids at the Ellisville State School's Laurel Day Habilitation program.

Davis and his apprentice, William Louge, build the toys, and the kids help bring the unfinished wood works to life by painting them.

"More people now-a-days are more interested in money, and Mr. Cliff is more interested in the joy that this brings him," said Louge.

Davis said he wasn't concerned with getting paid.

"If I can help them it's the best thing in the world," said Davis. "I make more than money will ever need just by seeing the smiles on their faces."

His toyshop can be reached at 601-498-5035.
