Golden Eagles to appear in New Orleans Bowl

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss accepted a bid to play in the New Orleans Bowl for the second straight year Sunday night.

The 2009 game won't be a rematch with Troy University, but instead the Golden Eagles will face off against Sun Belt runner-up Middle Tennessee.

USM head coach Larry Fedora served as offensive coordinator from 1999 until 2001 for the Blue Raiders.  They just capped off their first nine win season since 1992, and they will enter the New Orleans Bowl on a six game win streak.

For the Southern Miss players, especially the ones from New Orleans, going back to play in the big easy is incredible.

"It'll be a lot of fun getting to go down and play that close to home," said senior offensive lineman Ryan Hebert. "We're just excited to have one more opportunity to play with my teammates in one more game."

"It's always great to play in front of your home crowd," added sophomore linebacker Korey Williams, "but right now I'm just ready to play against another team.  I'm just ready to go."

Senior wide receiver Gerald Baptiste was thrilled to have the chance to play again in the Louisiana superdome where his favorite professional team has had so much luck this season.

"You grow up watching the saints play there," said Baptiste.  "I had an opportunity to play there last year, so there's nothing like going back home where you are from.  It will be special."

"I'm pretty eager," said Southern Miss head football coach Larry Fedora. "We are excited.  The whole team is excited that we are obviously going to be in another bowl.  We're fired up."

New Orleans Bowl tickets can be purchased by calling 1-800-844-tick, or by going online to www.southernmiss.com.  You can also buy them in person at the Pat Ferlise ticket office beginning Monday morning at 8:00a.m.

Tickets are $40 each and you are encouraged to purchase them through the Southern Miss athletic department to ensure you are sitting with the rest of the black and gold faithful.
