HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - It's a table where everyone was welcome.

"We were up here Wednesday for about 7 hours," said Joel Edwards with Brownstone's restaurant in Downtown Hattiesburg who says it was a labor of love, and thanksgiving, which happened to be the menu of the day.

"We just kind of wanted to give back and it feels absolutely wonderful to be able to be a part of something like this," said Edwards.

'This' is the first time Brownstone's has opened it's doors on Thanksgiving, severing anyone who wanted it, a free Thanksgiving day meal.

"I wanted everybody in the community to feel welcome to come to our restaurant whether it be for today or any day," said Edwards.

Thanks to donated food and labor from other businesses as well as volunteers, no one could leave hungry.

"Just with that small group of people we've got a smorgasbord of Thanksgiving dinner," said Edwards.

The spirit of giving went beyond plates of turkey and dressing. Brownstone's decided to sweeten the deal and help raise money for the Hattiesburg charity R3SM which assists victims of catastrophic events.

"Just the nature of the work we do would say to us if someone wants to help us, we have got to help them and so there's no other place that we would want to be on Thanksgiving," said executive director Sheila Varnado.

With each plate handed out Edwards hopes to send a message.

"I hope they take away from the fact that with such a really tough year for so many people that there are people out there that care about them," said Edwards.

"That's what it's all about, it's about giving," said Varnado.

"This is our Thanksgiving and to be honest with you so far, it's been the best one I've had in a while," said Edwards.
