HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Southern Miss is paying special tribute to our country's active duty military men and women and all veterans during the November 21st football game versus Tulsa.

President Martha Saunders, signed a proclamation stating the University will recognize veterans at one home football game each year and thank them for their service.

During the upcoming Tulsa game, each branch of the military will be recognized. Additionally, there will be a fireworks display, pre-game cookout and specially priced game day tickets for veterans and active duty military members.

The idea for the military tribute was the brain child of a Southern Miss Student Athlete Advisory Council Member, Paul Apyan.

"What we are trying to do is say thank you. And we want them to know that we are always going to be behind them. We are trying to set the national standard as a way of saying thank you to our military as a tradition at Southern Miss. And the signing of the proclamation will definitely help us out. We want to say thank you and let them know we are always here," said Apyan.

Tickets to the football game are also being distributed to veterans at Camp Shelby, Keesler Air Force Base and other military locations in the state.
