Projects turns old jeans into insulation

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Southern Miss is one of eight universities participating in a project aimed at converting denim into insulation for Habitat for Humanity homes.

The Public Relations Student Society of America has teamed up with Cotton Incorporated to promote a project called "Cotton--- from Blue to Green."

Several drop off points have been set up around campus and parts of the city. The goal is to get at least 500 pairs of blue jeans donated.

The jeans are recycled and turned into a natural cotton fiber insulation. Southern miss PRSSA president Scott Thornburg said there has been a great response to the project so far.

"I think most of the students when they find out what we are doing, they really like the idea, they want to help, you know they want to help other people and if it means donating a pair of their old blue jeans they are glad to do it."

The PRSSA has several drop off locations around the Hub Cty. The organization will continue this project for the remainder of the month.
