Residents oppose new homeless shelter in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg ministry wanting a zoning change will have to take it's plea to the neighborhood.

The city council hopes this will lead to a compromise.

A request to the council from Lighthouse Ministries which caters specifically to homeless and abused women and children was tabled Tuesday afternoon after a public hearing Monday afternoon where opposing sides debated the site.

City leaders said after hearing the support and opposition, the best bet is for the two sides to come together and work on common ground.

The measure is expected to go before the council again at their next meeting.
