COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) - Two Columbia police officials have been released from the department following a 90 day department head review.

During the session, which lasted over two hours, the board reviewed all of the city department heads and made its decision at this morning board of aldermen meeting.

The board decided to release police Chief Joe Van Parkman and Major Clem Evans. Both men resigned this afternoon. Mayor Reed Houston said there have been citizen complaints about the police department and that there was a need for change.

We just want to go in a different direction then what we have had for the last several years," said Houston. "The city as a whole I think has not been happy and we have felt that direction from them to make a change and that's what we are working on."

John Wayne Tolar has been named as the interim police chief. Tolar was recently fired by Chief Parkman as part of the police department's budget cuts. We called the police department to get comments from Chief Parkman and Major Evans for comment, but our phone call was not returned.
