Crematorium to open in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The business of cremation will soon be operating in Hattiesburg as one funeral home expands its service. 

Hulett-Winstead on Bay Street will now be offering the service after funeral home directors said cremations are on the rise. It will be in the building next to the main funeral home and will be the first crematorium within city limits and the second in the county.

The funeral home has already been approved on the state level and is currently in the public notice phase. So far funeral home Vice President Joe Winstead says he doesn't know of any opposition.

"Some people don't understand that a crematorium as far as the emissions and everything, they're smokeless, they're odorless. You'll never know they're there unless you're in the crematorium," said Winstead.

The only noticeable change to the building will be smokestack about 5-foot-high on top of the building. Winstead hopes to have the crematorium ready for operation by the end of November.

    Southern Miss looks to add a Conference USA tournament title to its regular season crown this week in Biloxi. The Golden Eagles (39-15, 23-6 C-USA) open tournament play against UAB on Wednesday at 4 p.m. inside MGM Park. "Certainly, this tournament it's no different than a regional atmosphere, that's what it's about,” said USM head coach Scott Berry.
