Lamar Supervisors delay zoning ordinance vote

By Jeff Daley

PURVIS, MS (WDAM) - The Lamar County board of supervisors voted Thursday to hold off action on a proposed new zoning ordinance.

The delay will give the supervisors an additional month to familiarize themselves with the details of the ordinance and will give all other parties concerned with the ordinance more time to voice their concerns and suggestions to the board.

A deadline for all suggestions to be delivered in writing to the board has been set for Oct. 16.

The supervisors will hold a work session on Oct. 22 at the Chancery Courthouse in Purvis where all concerned parties will be allotted time to address the board.

"We've had some requests from several different groups to extend it and give them more time," said Joe Bounds, president of the Lamar Board of Supervisors. "The board decided as a whole that we need additional time ourselves to review it and give us more time to look at these changes and suggestions."

A public hearing will be held on Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. when the board is expected to vote to adopt the ordinance.  If passed, the ordinance will go into effect Jan. 1.
