Laurel firefighter promoted to chief

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Longtime Laurel firefighter Jimmy Bunch has been named acting fire chief, replacing David Chance who recently announced his retirement.

Bunch is currently a battalion chief and former training officer for the department.

Mayor Melvin Mack announced the appointment today saying Bunch will remain at his current salary for six months and will get a $6,000 dollar pay raise should the appointment become permanent.

Bunch and another fireman filed a complaint against the city in 2007 alleging unfair promotion practices. He claimed when chance moved from battalion chief to chief, his position was never posted.

Bunch said when he questioned city officials, he was told the justice department required that position be filled by a caucasian.

Bunch was later promoted to the battalion chief's position.
