LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The countdown has begun for the city of Laurel. The city council must approve a balanced budget by 5 p.m. on Sept. 15.

"I am just hoping and praying that we pass this budget by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and if not I don't know what the next step will be" said Laurel Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Keveryn.

Keveryn said the administration has done all they can do and he is very confident with 2010 fiscal budget.

"We had to eliminate some jobs. We've frozen some jobs, that means they are still on the organization chart but they aren't going to be filled," said Keveryn. "We've eliminate some part time jobs and we've even got in this budget to take 3 full time positions and make them part time. The total savings of is over $550,000 for the year."

Keveryn said the city has also received a $600,000 insurance check which will help the city's surplus.
