HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg man is dead after a shooting Monday night and police are on the hunt for suspects.

It happened about 10 o'clock in the 700 block of Mobile Street when police say 38-year-old Terrance Phillips was shot several times before emergency crews arrived. Phillips was taken to the hospital where he later died.

At this time police do not know what lead to the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing a gray car pull up beside the victim just before the shooting.

There were even reports of yelling between the victim and someone inside the car before the sound of gunfire. The suspect vehicle then speed off.

"I was walking by and I was just hearing shots and I was hearing somebody say 'Oh no' and then the next thing you know I was hearing shots. I think I heard about 4 or 5 of them man. I heard it when I was walking down the street here and then I had saw him and then I saw somebody just ran off," said Michael Lofton, who was walking nearby.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call metro crime stoppers at 601-582-STOP.
