HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - One person was killed and several others were sent to the hospital after a prisoner transport van crashed on Interstate 59.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. near mile marker 66. The van was headed north when the driver lost control.

The van left the road, crashed into the woods, and flipped over onto to its roof. All 12 passengers had to be cut from the wreckage.

The 50-year-old unidentified driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. Two security agents and nine prisoners were taken to the hospital.

One guard and two prisoners are listed in critical condition. The third guard and other six prisoners are still in the hospital with various injuries.

A prisoner has been released and taken to the Forrest County Regional Jail.

Hattiesburg police spokesman Sgt. Synarus Green says the transport was carrying prisoners from Texas and Louisiana to different detention centers along the east coast.
