LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Members of the Laurel City Council's Budget Committee said they will not approve the 2010 fiscal year budget as written.

City administrators said they must to start over on the budget. The city has 12 days remaining before the deadline.

Committee members said the numbers in the proposed budget are too optimistic.

"Our backs are against the wall," said Laurel Chief Adminstrative Officer Dennis Keveryn. "We are going to see what 36-hour week would save us. Another thing is that we are going to look at maybe more positions cuts."

Under the budget proposed, property tax rates would increase and so would water and sewer charges. The city also cut 16 jobs.
