HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg police will be beefing up patrols this weekend as USM's home opener couples with a holiday weekend.

Police have already set up plans of action to increase officers and saturate certain areas as well as working relationships with Forrest County and USM departments. The department is expecting a large influx of people for Saturday's game at The Rock, which will mean higher traffic through the weekend as Labor Day celebrations get underway.

"We want everybody to be watching out for extra drivers on the road, watching out for the person beside you who may not be watching out for you. If you're going to be out celebrating and you have to drink, make sure you drink responsibly and if you have to get home make sure you have a designated driver or always call a cab," said Police sergeant Synarus Green.

HPD will also be setting up various check points throughout the weekend.
