HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A car crash ended the life of a 2-year-old child Wednesday, and now the driver is in jail on DUI death charges.

It was just after 8 a.m. when Hattiesburg police said the driver of a Chevy suburban, 28-year-old Darlena Mickel of Hattiesburg was heading down Hwy 49 before coming to a sudden halt.

"This is definitely one of those scenes we don't like to respond to," said police sergeant Synarus Green.

Green said Mickel is believed to have been under the influence as she went through the intersection at West Pine Street, only to crash seconds later.

"It look like she lost control of the vehicle and collided with the embankment," said Green.

From there Green said the vehicle flipped at least once before colliding with a utility pole, killing the 2-year-old boy inside. The toddler was pronounced dead on the scene. Mickel, who is unrelated to the boy, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police said a child seat was found in the vehicle, but wasn't being used.

"It did not appear that the child was being restrained at the time of the accident," said Green.

After being released from the hospital, Mickel was questioned and then arrested, charged with DUI resulting in death.

"Everybody was just crying, people were just freaking out and the cops were just trying to control everybody,"  said bystander Dustin Gills who was in the northbound lane and pulled up right after the wreck happened.

"[I] Started praying hoping everything was alright. It didn't look good because the hood and where the passengers would be was just crushed and demolished," said Gills.

Both lanes of traffic were shut down for about 2 hours as police tried to determine what caused the accident.

"Usually around this time of the morning traffic is pretty high, so it's still kind of hard to determine what all factors lead to the accident," said Green.

Mickel is being held in the Forrest County Jail and police aren't saying why the 2-year-old child was with her.
