Jones County Trustee walks away from work site

Jones County authorities are looking for an inmate who walked away from a road crew this morning.

Sheriff Alex Hodge said 25 year old Gregory Simmons of Laurel escaped from a road crew on South Fourth Avenue and Maple Street. Sheriff Alex Hodge said he believed that Simmons' girlfriend picked him up in a light green Ford Explorer with a Jasper County license tag.

Simmons was in jail on drug charges but now faces additional charges for the escape,Hodge said. He said Simmons' girlfriend, could also face jail time for aiding a felon.

    Construction is underway in Waynesboro on a new Sportsplex. It is located on Highway 184 near Wayne County High School. Phase One will include two fields for soccer and pee wee football.
