Tropical Storm Erika develops - WDAM-TV 7-News, Weather, Sports-Hattiesburg, MS

Tropical Storm Erika develops

Reconnaissance Aircraft took a trip into the area of low pressure east of the Leeward Islands and found minimum pressure of 1007 MB and a "broad" closed circulation.  Flight Winds maxed out at 52 KT.  The Storm has now been named Erika classified with max winds of 50 mph and gusts of 65 mph.  Erika is moving WNW at 9 mph.

The path over the next 5 days will be crucial to those of us in the Gulf region.  As of now, it appears Erika will make a slow turn up the East coast.  But if high pressure in the Atlantic builds faster than predicted, Erika could find its way into the Gulf of Mexico.  Stay tuned to WDAM for the latest information.
