Government warns of Swine Flu spread

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the spread of Swine Flu is inevitable and closing schools would do no good in stopping the virus.

This comes one day after a "plausible scenario" was reported by a presidential advisory panel indicating as much as half of the nation could be infected by the virus. The scenario went on to indicate that between 30,000 and 90,000 Americans, mostly children and young adults could die.

A vaccine is expected within the next month or two and everyone is being advised to get vaccinated. Forrest General emergency room Doctor John Nelson says the "scenario" isn't surprising since there's a low immunity to the new strain.

"The people who are more susceptible to the bad outcomes or complications are certainly those who have preexisting health disorders, emphysema, asthma, diabetes, heart conditions, things like that," says Nelson.

Taking care of yourself by washing your hands is being stressed by health leaders as well as not exposing others if you think you have flu symptoms.
