HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - Southern Miss officials announced plans for a centennial gateway on Friday.

The new University entrance will signify 100 years of Southern Miss history and serve as an impressive campus fixture. Southern Miss officials will dedicate the gateway on March 30 of 2010 to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the University's founding.

"We really wanted to establish a focal point for the campus, a presence. So you know when you pass through that gateway, you are in a very special place," said University President Martha Saunders.

The new entrance gate is being paid for through a $200,000 anonymous donation, and an over $17,000 contribution from the Gold Leaf secret society. That group supports a number of Southern Miss projects.
