State trying to fix cemetery concerns

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is working to fix the problems of four cemeteries, including one in Laurel, after the operator allegedly defrauded the public.

Sunset Gardens in Laurel is one of four cemeteries temporarily taken over by the state after allegations surfaced that operator Don Middleton misused customers' prepaid burial money. Hosemann says a current worker at the cemetery is taking inventory and he plans to meet tomorrow to go over what the next steps are.

The long term plan is to turn the cemeteries back over to private hands which Hosemann hopes to have done within sixmonths. So far there's been one conviction and one indictment. Warrants are also out for the operator of Sunset Gardens in Laurel.
