Claudette moves inland, Bill becomes a hurricane

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Early this morning (Monday), Tropical Storm Bill strengthened into a Hurricane over the Atlantic - the first of the season.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Claudette made landfall along the Florida Panhandle near Fort Walton Beach, but quickly weakened to maximum wind speeds of 35 mph as the storm progressed into northeastern Mississippi.

Claudette brought heavy rains, but no major damage has been reporterd. One death was recorded near Panama City - a surfer in his 20s who was pulled under. Another person has been reported as missing at sea.

Hurricane Bill has maximum sustained winds near 75 mph, but those winds are expected to reach 110 mph.

Bill is expected to become a major hurricane and pass northeast of Puerto Rico in the next five days.

Tropical Depression Ana is moving through the Caribbean Sea toward the Gulf of Mexico, but forecasters predict it will continue to weaken in the immediate future.

    A Saturday night shooting in the Hub City injured one and landed another behind bars. Coby Butler, 56, of Hattiesburg was arrested Saturday night and charged with one count of aggravated assault.  Hattiesburg Police Captain Branden McLemore said both the suspect and victim are homeless, and the shooting happened in a homeless camp in the wooded area behind 5696 U.S. 49. around 6 p.m.  “The victim, was shot in the chest with a pellet rifle,” said Hattiesburg Po...More >>
