HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - A record number of students started class Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic School in downtown Hattiesburg.

Sacred Heart is welcoming 581 students this year, making it the largest school in the Biloxi Diocese. The school consists of students in grades pre-kindergarten up through the twelfth grade.

Principal Brian McCrory said the high school classes are continuing to grow in size. Last year, 8 students graduated and this year Sacred Heart expects to graduate 17 seniors. Thirty students are projected to graduate in 2011.

McCrory said parents send their kids to Sacred Heart for many reasons, but mostly it's due to the good feelings they get when they walk around the school's campus.

"We're not a school with a church, we are a church with a school and you can feel that love and that spirit here. And when parents come here and when children come here they can feel it. It is something that is hard to describe. It is something that you have to witness as you are in the classrooms and hallways," said McCrory.

Two years ago, the school was extensively renovated, and McCrory said they are using every square inch to accommodate their students.
