RICHTON, MS (WDAM) - Senator Roger Wicker visited Perry County Tuesday evening to discuss the strategic petroleum reserve with Richton officials.

The Department of Energy plans to use a salt dome underneath Perry County to store 160 million barrels of oil. Fifty million gallons of water from the Pascagoula River will be pumped into the dome, to flush out the salt.

The resulting brine will be sent down a pipeline into the gulf. Critics fear that will cause environmental damage from that. Sen. Wicker said there's nothing to worry about.

"We're going to have to have a comfort level all up and down the Pascagoula River that no one is going to be harmed," said Wicker. "It's got to be a win-win situation; win for Richton, a win for the environment, a win for the Pascagoula River."
