HATTIESBURG (WDAM) - A grassroots effort to push for statewide voter ID found its way to the Forrest County Courthouse Thursday afternoon by way of petition.

Mississippi Republican Party Chairman Brad White, flanked by local republican lawmakers, is looking to collect enough voter signatures through a petition to send the issue of voter ID straight to Mississippi voters.

Hattiesburg is part of a 12-city tour to get the word out. White says it i time voter ID becomes a part of state elections to cut down on voter fraud and ensure a fair vote.

The initiative is sponsored by Senator Joey Fillingane. The goal is to collect a 100,000 signatures by Oct. 1 in order to get it on the ballot for November of next year.

So far, about 25,000 voters have signed the petition.
