William Carey reopens at new campus

Associated Press - July 31, 2009 7:04 AM ET

BOLOXI, Miss. (AP) - Four years after Hurricane Katrina's destruction, William Carey University's Gulf Coast faculty and students are about to get a new home.

Classes begin Aug. 24 at the new 30-acre campus, part of the planned Tradition community in Harrison County, 15 minutes north of Biloxi.

What William Carey leaves behind are 16 modular buildings on its old oceanfront campus in Gulfport.

Enrollment pre-Katrina was 800 on the coast. It immediately dipped to 500 in the months following the storm and has been slowly recovering since.

President Tommy King said the ideal scenario would have been just to rebuild at the old site, but sky-high insurance rates and the landlocked nature of the old 20-acre campus rendered any such plans unfeasible.
