Favre stays retired

Brett Favre has informed Minnesota Vikings officials that he will remain retired.

Vikings head coach Brad Childress told the Star Tribune this afternoon that Favre will not be playing for the team this season.  Childress said the physically grueling schedule of the NFL season is part of the reason Favre reached his conclusion.

"I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division," Childress said. "He knows our system inside out ... This doesn't change anything about how I feel about our football team."

Favre's decision comes nearly six weeks after having surgery on his shoulder, which many people assumed it was a step towards playing for the Vikings.
