Chopper discovers dozens of pot plants

MCLAIN, MS (WLBT) - An airborne search in Greene County has turned up a field of marijuana plants.

The landowner, 61-year-old Matthew McLeod, was arrested on drug and weapons charges. It happened in McLain which is southeast of Hattiesburg.

Authorities say 34 pot plants were spotted from a National Guard helicopter on McLeod's land. Some of the plants were up to four feet tall, with an estimated value of $34,000.

The air detection operation was conducted by the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, the Greene County Sheriff's Department and the National Guard.

In addition to charges of manufacturing marijuana, McLeod was charged with possession of a stolen firearm. While searching McLeod's property, authorities found a rifle reported stolen in 1995 from a former Greene County justice court judge.
