Hattiesburg, Ms(WDAM)- The weekend before school starts is traditionally one of the busiest shopping times of the year. Now, with state's tax-free shopping incentive happening on the same weekend, retailers are bracing for the back-to-school rush.
The holiday begins July 31 and will last for 48 hours. Shoes and clothing are the only items to be tax exempt.
Felicia McSwain, store manager at Shoe Show said they anticipate an overflow of customers and they are loading up on extra merchandise for people looking to buy new shoes for the new school year.
"We have various different kinds of shoes and styles especially for kids going back to school," said McSwain. "We are offering 50 percent off selected items in the store, so I think that is a great advantage to the parents as well."
Shoe Show, as well as many other retailers, will pre-program their registers for 24-hours, so no tax will be added to purchases under $100.
