HATTIESBURG, MS. (WDAM) - This week just under 100 hundred adults with mental challenges are enjoying an activity packed experience at the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp.
This the 48th year of the camp, which is held in South Forrest County. Adult campers are able to choose each evening the kinds of activities they want to participate in the following day. Boating and swimming are very popular, but campers can also try their hand at drama, sports and arts and crafts.
In total the camp offers 20 different activities which are headed by about 120 volunteers. One of those is camp counselor Darrah Waddle. She has been a part of the camp for 14 years, the last five as a counselor.
"You come here and you develop relationships with everybody and and they just love you no matter what," said Waddle. "And they just want to be your friend and they are all really caring."
Twice a day campers head to the canteen at the camp's pavilion. That is where they can relax and socialize with each other.
This week concludes the Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp for 2009.
